Testimonial ++ Internship ++ New Zealand

Nicole's Unforgettable Internship in Auckland, New Zealand

Having such an unforgettable internship and life experience in Auckland, Nicole is here to share her beautiful journey.

" I can remember exactly the ride to our house, we listened to Roses by The Chainsmokers on the radio, and Monique explained to me that the winter has just begun in New Zealand, which was foreign to me after a 42 hours flight from the West, at the beginning of May."

At the beginning of my internship, I lived at the Northshore in Browns Bay, a wonderful suburb northern to Auckland, perfect for families and 30 kilometers away from my new workplace in Penrose. At first, I thought it would not be a problem to take the bus and the train. But after spending four hours every day traveling in overcrowded public means of transport, I noticed, that the public transport in Auckland is new and can possibly be improved, but it would not be faster to drive with the car because of heavy traffic jam.

My First Working Experience

I did my internship at a national travel organization, which offers bus tours for the whole country. From Monday to Wednesday I worked in the Operations Department, from Thursday to Sunday I helped in the Customer Service of the reservation department. As I just did my school-leaving examination in Germany last year, I have never worked in an office before. I was happy that they showed me my own desk and gave me a coffee mug with the company logo. In the beginning, there was a lot to learn and I had to get used to sit from 8 am to 5 pm in front of a computer - just a typical office job.

After four months here in New Zealand I can recommend a stay abroad organized by Studentsgoabroad to everyone as I am absolutely glad to make this experience. My internship offered me the possibility to get an insight into different departments of this company. Furthermore, I learned to work independently, to bear responsibility and of course I could widen my command of English. As I did the internship, not as a part of my studies, I did not have to work on a report for my university and so I had the possibility to work on projects for the company besides my daily tasks in the Operations Department.

Beautiful New Zealand

In the meantime, I moved to Hillsborough, which is only 7 kilometers away from my place of work, 10 kilometers south of the inner city and directly by the sea. One thing is clear: New Zealand is by far one of the most beautiful countries in the world with gorgeous beaches, breathtaking sceneries and impressive national parks. Besides the job and on a day off there are so many leisure activities for example rafting, swimming in the Hot Pools in Rotorua, visiting vineyards on Waiheke Islands, discovering the French Markets in Parnell on the weekend, cheering for the All Blacks in Eden Park or hiking in the Alps in Tongariro National Park.

All in all, I am really happy about my decision to go with Studentsgoabroad to New Zealand. I could also profit from the professional perspective: I got an insight in all areas of the enterprise, I extended my Business English and learned to work on my own with responsibility from 8 am to 5 pm in the office. Personally I could learn a lot, as I was for the first time away from home for such a long time and did everything completely on my own. I can only recommend this challenge to everyone and I am proud of doing this experience thanks to Students Go Abroad.
