Overview: Adventure tour through Sri Lanka

Meet the country and the culture of Sri Lanka! The variety of this island is unique and should therefore be explored extensively. With this exploratory journey, you will experience the exotic character of the island in a way you have never dreamed of. In this special 4-weeks adventure program, you will travel to 3 different destinations to get to know the real Sri Lanka. You will also visit famous attractions such as the Dutch Colony of Galle, the beautiful Botanical Gardens and the impressive tea factories. In addition, you will be able to admire the impressive architecture of Sri Lanka during numerous trips. This trip will definitely enchant you!

What to expect

Description: Adventure tour through Sri Lanka

As a real adventurer you will certainly get your money’s worth with this program! Three unforgettable weeks awaiting you on this adventure trip through Sri Lanka with cool attractions, experiences, great views and captivating places. The extraordinary thing about this trip: the range of options we can offer you! There will be something for everyone!

WEEK 1

To begin this trip a introduction week takes place, with focus on the country itself and its culture:

Monday:

  • Welcome and introduction of the program
  • Submitting all important documents
  • Language course and then lunch
  • Culture course and city tour through Kandy
  • Culture show

Tuesday:

  • Visit the ‘Spice and Ayurvedic’-garden, a tea factory, and the Gem Museum
  • Boat tour on Kandy Lake

Wednesday:

  • Sri Lankan cooking class, self-defense course and an introduction to Buddhism

Thursday:

  • Early morning visit of the temple ‘Temple of the Tooth’
  • Visit a batik factory and a wood carver
  • Sunset

Friday:

  • Hike to Bahirawakanda (white Buddha statue) and visit the Hindu Temple
  • Indian lunch in the city
  • Ayurvedic massage

The weekend is at leisure!

WEEK 2

In the second week you can choose between the following three programs:

Trekking Week:

  • Brief introduction to the planned activities
  • Hike to the Sigiriya Rock
  • Walk through the local villages to visit three historic temples (over 700 years old)
  • Visit Sri Lanka’s first tea factory
  • Hike to the Riverstone Mountain
  • Continue the journey to Ambuluwawa Hills
  • Trip to the Royal Botanic Gardens

Body and Mind Week:

  • Relax at morning yoga classes
  • Test different kinds of massages
  • Learn about Surya Namaskar (Yoga warm-up exercises) and asanas (resting bodies in yoga)
  • Enjoy relaxing afternoons
  • Ascent to the second stage of Yogasana to increase flexibility
  • Meditating

Adventure week with elephants:

  • Feeding the elephants in the mornings
  • Bathing the elephants
  • Preparing the meals for the elephants e.g. cutting branches (elephants eat between 250 and 300 kg of food every day)
  • Gain valuable impressions about how to train an elephant
  • Become friends with the elephants

The weekend is at leisure!

WEEK 3 + 4

In the third week you will participate in these two programs:

Get to know Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beaches:

  • Enjoy a relaxing and culturally inspiring week
  • Sunbathing and get to know the Sinhala culture
  • Relax at the city beach of Ambalangoda
  • Visit the sleeping Buddha state, the tsunami museum and a silk factory
  • Enjoy a river safari
  • Visit the Moonstain Jewelry mine and admire the work on the wet raw materials

Working on a turtle farm:

  • Work on one of the nine turtle farms in Sri Lanka, which are specialized in breeding and conservation
  • Get to know different turtle species
  • Take care of wounded turtles
  • Combating the effects of water pollution
  • Release more than 100 newborn turtles every week

The weekend is at leisure!

Note! These programs can be changed at any time due to weather conditions! Every adventurer needs shoes suitable for walking and hiking. To register on-site you need a copy of your passport. From mid July until the end of August the Elephant experience is not available due to the festival season in Kandy.


Itinerary of your stay abroad

Program flow in Sri Lanka

Program start:

The introduction week always starts on a Monday and ends on a Friday.

Arrival Date:

We recommend to arrive at a Saturday or Sunday because the airport pickup is only included on the weekends. Arrivals during week days have to be paid extra.

Arrival at the airport:

You will arrive at the CMG - BanBandaranyake International Airport and from there you will be brought directly to the Volunteer Center in Kandy by your volunteer coordinators. You will spend your first week in Kandy getting to know the culture and the other volunteers. In your first week you will start your program. In case you are already in Sri Lanka you can organize your arrival yourself and wait until the weekend to get picked up at the CMB or in Kandy.

Your accommodation

Accommodation during your community engagement work in Kandy, Sri Lanka

The volunteer house in located about 2 kilometers from the city center. In each room 4-6 persons can be accommodated. Boys/men and girls/women are accommodated in separate rooms. There is one bathroom available per room, which will be shared with your roommates.  The house is also equipped with a refrigerator, which can be used for cooling drinks and food. Safety deposit boxes are also available. There is no wifi in this house.

Meals During the week you will be provided with 3 meals and on the weekends with 2 meals per day. The food is a mix of Western and typical Sri Lankan food and consists mainly of rice and vegetables. Of course you can also eat somewhere else and taste the local cuisine (at your own expense). The next supermarket and ATM is about a 15 minutes walk away.
