Overview Internship in Towhnship Kindergarten in South Africa

Our partner is an established local organization that is devoted entirely to the subject of education. The NGO has several projects including early childhood development, assistance with homework for primary and secondary school students, advice and career guidance as well as monitoring and assistance during university studies.

Interns will be most likely be allocated to the Early Childhood Development Programme. The programme supports ten crèches and kindergartens in the severely under-resourced township Philippi. Each facility accommodates 20-180 children from a few months to 6 years.

While the end of apartheid removed most of the legal barriers to personal development, people in Philippi and the surrounding townships still struggle to access quality education opportunities and meaningful employment. The majority of Philippi's residents live in informal wood and iron structures without electricity or running water. The community struggles with HIV/AIDS, crime, teenage pregnancy, gangsterism, substance abuse and domestic violence.

Early childhood care and education facilities reach only a fraction of children in need. Many children are left unattended while their parents work or search for work, or stay at home because their parents cannot afford the small fee. Most education centres are housed in unsafe, poorly-equipped shacks and daycare facilities are often run by untrained teachers, with little focus on cognitive development.

The NGO office is based in the suburb Observatory and transport to the work location will be provided from there.

Your coordinator in Cape Town

"My name is Jana Williams, I am originally from Germany, but living in South Africa for 8 1/2 years. Nearly 6 years of those I stayed in the mother city of Cape Town. I am now managing all internship and volunteer placements for Studentsgoabroad Cape Town. During my studies of Social Work I did internships abroad myself. I have been to London, India and even in Cape Town which was 12 years ago. While still living in Germany I started placing interns in Southern African countries and always enjoyed this activity. This activity is interesting, exciting, versatile and most of all positive, as a stay abroad always enlarges the personal horizon."a
