About this position

Overview: Medical Project in Tigman, Palawan, Philippines

On the island of Palawan many people live in small villages far away from big cities. For medical questions and treatments, the villagers usually visit local healthcare centers. Within these centers there is a lack of doctors and nurses, which means that not all patients can be treated adequately. The aim of this project is to support the local doctors with volunteers who already have some medical experience. In addition to the support of the local healthcare centers, help is also required in small local hospitals.

What to expect

Description: Medical Project in Tigman, Palawan, Philippines

This program focuses on your personal learning effect, you will gain a lot of experience while working side by side with the doctors and nurses. You will have the opportunity to learn a lot of new things and to internalize new medical practices. In addition to the supportive work in the healthcare center, you will also start small campaigns or create information leaflets to enhance the understanding of health treatments and diseases. These campaigns are not limited to be run at schools, but can also be targeted at elderly villagers. Every day will bring a new challenge for you to grow in person! Before your project work starts you will have an introductory week to prepare you for the new and foreign culture.

Daily schedule:

  • You will work from Monday to Friday in the mornings and afternoons either in the health care center, the hospital or at the school. In between you will have time to get your lunch.

Requirements:

  • Medical training or work experience
  • To be a doctor, nurse, therapist or medical student is a plus

Itinerary of your stay abroad

Program flow in Tigman, Philippinen

Time of arrival
Arrival day is always on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Our partner organization will pick you up from the airport (Puerto Princesa International Airport) and drop you at your accommodation in Tigman. Introduction week and start of the program
Before the project work begins, a cultural introduction week takes place, in order to overcome the first culture shock easily. During this week you will get all relevant information about your project, you will get to know Tigman and the surroundings and immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions during a Philippine language and cooking class. In addition you will have excursions to the island's capital Puerto Princesa and to Narra. On the Monday after the introduction week your project work will start. Weekends
Weekends are freetime! Consult your program coordinator for excursions, activities and must see's around Tigman. Departure

Your accommodation

Accommodation during your Community Engagement work in Tigman, Philippines

Together with other volunteers, who are participating in a project around Tigman, you will be accommodated in a volunteer house. This house was built with a lot of natural elements and offers a tropical view on the beach! The rooms are equipped with bunk beds and offer space for 6-8 people. There is only a limited number of laundry facilities available, so you either have to wash your clothes by hand or you can use the laundry service for a small fee. Meals During the weeks you will be provided with 3 meals and on the weekend with 2 meals per day. The food mainly consists of local Philippine cuisine (lots of vegetables, meat, egg and rice) and will be served directly in you accommodation.
