About this position

Overview: Teaching English in a Kindergarten in Kandy, Sri Lanka

The kindergartens are all located in the highlands around Kandy. The work takes place in one of the numerous kindergartens there. The children who visit these kindergartens are between 3 and 5 years old, very active and enthusiastic. Here they should learn pronunciation, rhythms and numbers in a playful way.

What to expect

Description: Teaching English in a Kindergarten in Kandy, Sri Lanka

At the start of this project an introduction week will take place and after this week you will start working as assistant teacher straight away.

Tasks:

  • You have the opportunity to teach the children in English, music, art or other foreign languages
  • Inspire the children for education
  • Support the local teachers
  • Help to develop creative curricula

Note! You need a copy of your passport and a certificate of criminal records.


Itinerary of your stay abroad

Program flow in Sri Lanka

Program start:

The introduction week always starts on a Monday and ends on a Friday.

Arrival Date:

We recommend to arrive at a Saturday or Sunday because the airport pickup is only included on the weekends. Arrivals during week days have to be paid extra.

Arrival at the airport:

You will arrive at the CMG - BanBandaranyake International Airport and from there you will be brought directly to the Volunteer Center in Kandy by your volunteer coordinators. You will spend your first week in Kandy getting to know the culture and the other volunteers. In your first week you will start your program. In case you are already in Sri Lanka you can organize your arrival yourself and wait until the weekend to get picked up at the CMB or in Kandy.

Your accommodation

Accommodation during your community engagement work in Kandy, Sri Lanka

The volunteer house in located about 2 kilometers from the city center. In each room 4-6 persons can be accommodated. Boys/men and girls/women are accommodated in separate rooms. There is one bathroom available per room, which will be shared with your roommates.  The house is also equipped with a refrigerator, which can be used for cooling drinks and food. Safety deposit boxes are also available. There is no wifi in this house.

Meals During the week you will be provided with 3 meals and on the weekends with 2 meals per day. The food is a mix of Western and typical Sri Lankan food and consists mainly of rice and vegetables. Of course you can also eat somewhere else and taste the local cuisine (at your own expense). The next supermarket and ATM is about a 15 minutes walk away.
