About this position

Overview: Teaching English in a Preschool in Hanguranketha, Sri Lanka

Hanguranketha is located in the highlands of Sri Lanka. It offers a unique and breathtaking landscape. As participants in this project in this city you can get to know the city, the people and the highlands from a completely new perspective. The classes take place at both the private and public preschools. By learning English the Sri Lankan children improve their chances to find a good job in the future or to learn other foreign languages. In this project the volunteers actively contribute to a better future for Sri Lanka’s children.


What to expect

Description: Teaching English in a Preschool in Hanguranketha, Sri Lanka

This project offer two different ways of teaching English:

  1. You can teach at the private and public preschools in Hanguranketha, where you will teach the children mainly in spelling and reading. You can create a playful access to the English language for the children with playing games or singing.
  2. Alternatively, you can also teach at a school for disadvantaged children. This school is located about 6 kilometers away from Hanguranketha and has circa 150 students and 10 teachers. The children attending this school are mainly from lower income families who work in agriculture. Here you will teach the children the basics of English and improve so their communication skills. The focus is to help each child individually if necessary. The children here will need your full attention.

Working hours:

Monday to Friday: 8 am to 11.30 am, in the afternoon you will attend different activities/projects

Requirements:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Good English communication skills
  • Piercings and tattoos must be covered/removed

To register on-site you need a copy of your passport and a certificate of criminal records.


Itinerary of your stay abroad

Program flow in Sri Lanka

Program start:

The introduction week always starts on a Monday and ends on a Friday.

Arrival Date:

We recommend to arrive at a Saturday or Sunday because the airport pickup is only included on the weekends. Arrivals during week days have to be paid extra.

Arrival at the airport:

You will arrive at the CMG - BanBandaranyake International Airport and from there you will be brought directly to the Volunteer Center in Kandy by your volunteer coordinators. You will spend your first week in Kandy getting to know the culture and the other volunteers. In your first week you will start your program. In case you are already in Sri Lanka you can organize your arrival yourself and wait until the weekend to get picked up at the CMB or in Kandy.

Your accommodation

Accommodation during your community engagement work in Hanguranketha, Sri Lanka

The volunteer house is only a few kilometers away from the city center. In each room 4 to 6 people will be accommodated. Boys/men and girls/women are accommodated separately. Each room has access to one bathroom, which will be shared with all roommates. You can relax or eat together with other volunteers in the cozy garden in front of the house. A fridge where you can cool your drinks and foods is also available. The volunteer house has no access to Wifi. Meals During weekdays you will be provided with 3 meals per day and on the weekends with 2 meals. The meals mainly consists of rice and vegetables and are a mix of Western and local cuisine.
