Overview: conservation volunteering on Isabela Island, Ecuador

Isabela Island is the largest island from Galápagos. Isabela is rich in flora and fauna, Isabela’s marine and animal life is beyond compare. The island has unique species and is the home of an important amount of wild tortoises. Other noted species include penguins, cormorants, marine iguanas, boobies, pelicans, Galapagos Land Iguanas, Galápagos Hawks, Galápagos Doves and a very interesting lowland vegetation. The west coast of Isabela in the Bolivar Channel is the best place in Galapagos for viewing whales and dolphins.

What to expect

Description: conservation volunteering on Isabela Island, Ecuador

Volunteers can help in the area of plants conservation in the greenhouse. There is also help needed in the area of the turtle conservation, for example feeding them and cleaning the enclosure. You will work on an ecolodge which helps the national park in different fields of nature conservation.  If you want, you can also support the team of the ecolodge in the fields of tourism and hospitality.

Start date of project
The volunteer projects run throughout the year. Therefore, we are open for your individual suggestion, which we are going to propose to our partner organisation. Time of arrival
We recommend to arrange an arrival a few days beofre your start of the volunteer project. You can move in to your guest family up to 3 days before the official project starts at no additional costs. You then have enough time to recover from the long flight, get to know your host family and make your first trips. Arrival in Quito and Transfer to Galápagos Island
Arriving in a new country is always exciting. We want your arrival to be as relaxed as possible. One of the staff members of our partner organization will pick you up at the airport in Quito and bring you to an accommodation, where you will have a 2-day sleep over, before you head to Galápagos. Stopover in Quito
You will be in Quito for 2 nights, before you continue to the Galápagos Islands. Accommodation and meals are provided. After your stay you will be picked up again by the coordinator in Quito, who will drop you to the airport, where you will be transfered to the Galápagos Islands. Please note, that the transfer flight will be booked 15 days in advance. The project starts
On the first day of your project, you are accompanied by a member of our local partner who will answer all of your questions. The further project days your local contact person will always be available for you via phone if you have any concerns or issues to share with somebody. Free time & weekend
The weekend is totally yours! You may ask your local contact person from our partner organisation about upcoming events, sights, shopping tips or other must see’s. On some days there will be field trips organized by our partner organization. We recommend you to join them as it is always fun to experience a new country with others.  
Departure  You shall contact your local contact person a few days before your departure back home. Your coordinator will pick you up and drop you back to the airport to Quito again. You will have a sleep over in Quito again, before you head back home.

Your accommodation

Accommodation: volunteer program at the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

In the Galápagos Islands, the volunteer will be received at the airport by the
host family in order to be taken at home.
The family in Galápagos Islands will provide to the Volunteer with the three daily meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Besides that, one member of the host family will take to the Volunteer to her/his first day at work in the Project and will introduce him/her to the coordinator in Galápagos. These are a few examples of the typical food that is served in the community: Breakfast: Green plantain patties with cheese and egg or arepas/tortillas or
omelets or an assortment of breads accompanied with coffee and milk, tea and
juice. Lunch: Chicken soup, salad and a meat serving or shrimp or crab soup with
cebiche and salad accompanied by white rice and juice Dinner: A mix of rice and fried fish or beefsteak and salad or chicken with pasta
accompanied by tea and coffee In the kitchen area a refrigerator is available for participants as well as purified water for drinking. Meals will be provided by the host family. In addition, participants are expected to help by keeping their rooms clean and in order. Please note: Participants must advise of their dietary needs (e.g. if they are vegetarian or have any allergies) prior to their departure.
