Overview: voluntary care work in a nursery and kindergarten in Buenos Aires, Argentina

The neighborhood is part of the string of "villas" (slum areas), which are located in the south and west of the City of Buenos Aires. This school district has vacancies for only 20% of infants in the neighborhood. Thus, parents who must go to work have to leave their children in the care of teenage brothers or neighbors, who have to take care of many children of different ages at a time and don't have adequate space.

This kindergarten was created by a teacher of the neighborhood, that ceded a part of her home for the children to have a healthy space to learn, play and share with other children of the same age. She realized that children need a place to develop both intellectually and emotionally.

About 30 children aged 3-5 years visit her kindergarten every day. They receive breakfast and lunch and the attention of the teacher and 2 assistants.
