About this position

Overview: volunteer English teaching and hotel management in Ubud, Bali 

The organization of this volunteer project in Bali, Ubud, aims at giving the young Balinese access to a proper school education with focus on tourism; this especially means, that you can mainly volunteer in teaching in English, in hospitality and in sustainable tourism. The school has 50 students per class. The region’s two main sources of income are farming and tourism. It is the organization's mission to provide affordable education to low income families and give students the skills to get reasonable jobs in tourism. They therefore support the school management by providing trainings, skilled teachers and with the building of an Eco Hotel which at the same time will serve as a training center.

What to expect

Description: volunteer English teaching and hotel management in Ubud, Bali 

Your task field as a volunteer can range from:
  • teaching in English
  • Japanese
  • IT
  • hotel management
  • supporting the construction with renewable energy knowledge
  • volunteer in fundraising by marketing and promotion.
Your daily tasks as a volunteer will be: 
  • assist the English teacher in all English classes from Monday to Friday 8 am to 3 pm
  • help to develop fundraising ideas
  • support the cooking, hotel management, IT or Japanese classes
  • Marketing and Social Media Marketing
You will be overwhelmed by the gratitude and hospitality of the local people and the rich culture in the area of Ubud. The school is located in the north of Ubud, the cultural centre of Bali. Due to a higher location the temperatures may be lower than in south coast areas. The well-known Ayung river provides vital watering for the fertile soil, which are usually used for planting rice. You can find Bali's best SPA's and Bali's most trendy wellness hotels in this area. Contrary to this, the local people depend on agriculture and most of them live just above the poverty line. Nevertheless, especially those people will lend you a helping hand and offer you a smile whenever they meet foreigners. To get around in this area you will have to drive the scooter. Most of the scooter rentals offer automatic scooters, which are easy to handle even if you don't have a special driver's lisence. Requirements:

Start date of project

The projects starts on every Monday.

Time of arrival

We recommend to arrange an arrival from Tuesday to Thursday, that you have the chance to join the orientation day, which is always scheduled on Friday. You then have enough time to recover from the long flight, get to know your roommates and make your first trips.

Arrival at the Airport

Arriving in a new country is always exciting. We want your arrival to be as relaxed as possible. One of the staff members of our partner organization will pick you up at the airport and bring you to your host family or your shared flat. He/she will be waiting for you at the airport with a sign with your name on it.

Orientation program

Friday after your arrival one of the team members of our partner organisation will visit you in your accommodation and show you around. You will get to know the location and its people and you will be informed about Do’s and Don'ts. The program will be held with more volunteers at the same time. This is the perfect opportunity to get to know like-minded globetrotters. Your local contact person will provide you with further useful hints for a good starting point into a new lifestyle.

The project starts

On the first day of your project (Monday), you are accompanied by a team member of the local partner and will be introduced to your project. The next days, your contact person will always be reachable through phone and will assist you with any occurring problems.

Free time & weekend

The weekend is totally yours! You may ask your local contact person from our partner organisation about upcoming events, sights, shopping tips or other must see’s. On some days there will be field trips organized by our partner organization. We recommend you to join them as it is always fun to experience a new country with others. 

Departure

You shall contact your local contact person a few days prior to your departure to inform about options for your airport drop-off. It will not be included in the services of the volunteer projects, but our expert will help you organize it.

Your accommodation

Volunteer accommodation in Bali

Volunteers participating in a project located in Ubud are accommodated in different rooms depending on their project location. Vocational high school: Volunteers will stay in seperate and private rooms, so-called homestays, which shall not be mistaken with host families. You will live in a basic standard room with aircondition, fan and wifi.  Primary school and bird conservation: If you are volunteering in the primary school in Ubud or in the bird conservation center you can choose between living in a traditional room, "kos", which is equipped with an own bathroom, basic cooking equipment and a fridge) or you can choose to stay in one of the rooms of the hotel, which is used for trainings from a high school. Both options are comfortable and safe. Teaching at high school: Volunteers can opt between staying in a host family or directly in one of the rooms of the hotel trainings center in the school area.
Each volunteer is provided a private room. Rooms in the host family are less well equipped as in the hotel.

Your coordinator in Bali, Indonesia

All internship and volunteer programs in Bali are coordinated by Laura and Rima. Laura was born in Surabaya, Java, and moved to Bali several years ago to finish her English Literature Master in Cultural studies. Rima, joined the team after returning home from from her 4-year stay in Germany.  The young and energetic team will assist you during your travel preparations and during your entire stay on the island. Moreover, they regularly organise meetings with all interns and volunteers and are happy to share insider tips, that will make your stay unique and unforgettable.
