About this position

Overview: volunteer settlement project in South Africa

This project aims to support a number of small programs which were introduced to fight poverty in the settlements of Cape Town and help create a positive trend. Employment and education are offered to the people where ever possible, for example in fields like agriculture and sustainability. New organic gardens are formed, existing gardens are cultivated and workshops and skill enhancements in gardening and self-sufficiency are offered. This way, malnutrition and poverty alike can be countered. Regular education programs – but also leisure events at the beach, activities and excursions throughout the whole year – newly motivate the inhabitants of the settlements and lift up spirits as well as the social circumstances. Highlights
  • work in local “Educare” programs (child care and education)

  • support deprived families in the settlements

  • develop your own projects with children and adults alike

  • experience what it is like to work in an NGO

  • get to know the South African culture and way of life

  • make new friends!

What to expect

Description: volunteer settlement project in South Africa

Volunteers work 5 days a week in the project. Timetables vary between 4 and 8 hours a day, depending on what challenges need to be tackled at the time. The settlement project is very flexible and aprreciates volunteers who are not hesitant to show initiative – it is even possible to develop and execute your own small projects in the townships! The main objective should be to support the inhabitants in their basic needs and provide them with the opportunity to develop on an economical and on a personal level. Examples of previous projects:
  • “Winter Hope”: providing warm clothes and shoes for the children, blankets for the families, as well as materials to fix holes in the settlement huts – families need to be protected from the cold, so they have one less trouble to worry about

  • building classrooms, fences and a playground for a local pre-school

  • building a brick school for mentally and physically disabled children

  • growing and cultivating various organic vegetable gardens for families in the settlements as well as the local pre-school

  • building a stable for goats in the community

Volunteer tasks:
  • teaching and caring for children in Educare centres

  • passing on your technical knowledge in computer classes

  • conveying your social skills and your knowledge of HIV prevention, drug abuse etc.

  • organising events, leisure activities and sports programs

  • working with and teaching the adults of the community

  • fundraising and administrative tasks in the NGO office

Your coordinator in Cape Town

"My name is Jana Williams, I am originally from Germany, but living in South Africa for 8 1/2 years. Nearly 6 years of those I stayed in the mother city of Cape Town. I am now managing all internship and volunteer placements for Studentsgoabroad Cape Town. During my studies of Social Work I did internships abroad myself. I have been to London, India and even in Cape Town which was 12 years ago. While still living in Germany I started placing interns in Southern African countries and always enjoyed this activity. This activity is interesting, exciting, versatile and most of all positive, as a stay abroad always enlarges the personal horizon."a
