The "Most Beautiful Island in the World" - Palawan
To help facilitate your entry into your Philippines adventure, a cultural introductory week takes place before the start of all volunteer work programs. Together with other volunteers, you will be immersed in Philippine culture during a week of language and cooking classes. In addition to important information about your project work, you will also visit your project site, Tigman, the surrounding area, as well as other parts of "the most beautiful island in the world" (Melanie Liebermann: The World's Best Islands www.travelandleisure.com/worlds-best/islands#palawan 17.11. 2016).
Support local fishermen and farmers in their daily work
The Philippines are a resource-rich country with one of the emerging economies of Southeast Asia. This upswing is moving fastest on the main islands around the metropolitan area of Manila. In southern regions, people continue to live in poverty and earn their livelihood through traditional agriculture and fisheries. This is where our community program aims to sustainably support the local population and help these regions progress.
Get Involved for the Children of Tigman
The Philippine village of Tigman is characterized by poverty. Therefore one of our main goals is the children. It is important that they are happy and enjoy a fulfilling childhood. You can help them do just that through volunteer work in our teaching program, either by bringing schoolchildren closer to the English language, or by assisting in a kindergarten.
As a medical student or apprentice in the field of health care, you have the opportunity to gain practical experience by volunteering in our medical project. During your work in a local health center or hospital you will accumulate valuable knowledge and experience while making a huge contribution to the community and local doctors who are in need of your assistance.
Construction and renovation project
In contrast to the island's capital, Puerto Princesa, the annual destination of thousands of tourists, the small fishing village of Tigman is much more traditional. Here, volunteers can help the people in the village through construction and renovation work, maintaining and rebuilding the community while taking trips to unspoiled lands and isolated white sand beaches.
The Land of Thousands of Islands - What Makes the Philippines a "Slightly Different Asia"?
Typical Asian? - This is Spanish!
Once you arrive in the Philippines, you will quickly sense the Spanish influence. Not only do the locals resemble South Americans in their physical features, but also their temperament and language, Tagalog, are very similar to Spanish.
Language Barriers? - Not Even in Rural Areas!
Among the Asian countries there is a comparatively high level of English spoken in the Philippines. Traveling around rural areas in countries like Thailand or Vietnam can be a challenge without local language skills, a problem you will not face traveling through the Philippines. Since the American colonial era, English is the second official language spoken by the majority of the population.
Wonderful Asian Temple? - Wrong!
Anyone who is looking for beautiful Asian temples will be disappointed in the Philippines. The Philippines is the only country in Southeast Asia which is characterized by Christianity. Over 90% of the population are Catholic Christians.
