London, nothing new
Buckingham Palace, London Eye, Big Ben – we all know them, the classic attractions in London, with daily hoards of tourists. There actually seems to be no other stimulus to move your placement to the nearby London. But do not forget, you'll be an intern in London, so no tourist! The difference? You can take much more time to explore the city center and the suburbs. The real English life takes place hidden in the small streets and markets away from the big attractions. See the back streets by bicycle, which can be hired at a small cost at the far-flung docks. Many hidden parks, river banks and lakes invite you to meet for lunch or after work with colleagues to relax. Musicals and festivals offer an alternative to the pub entertainment of an evening. If you are lucky enough to live in a homestay, you’ll get a whole list of insider tips. Take time also to keep up with your host family to do something on Sunday - the English love Sunday outings, like going out for tea and scones.
Internship Guide England
“I don’t drink coffee I drink tea my dear.”
English culture can be found everywhere: in the museums, in ancient palaces, or even directly in front of you, and all the time. Your everyday way to work with the Tube ("Please mind the gap"), the dry humor of your employees, the tea breaks at work, which are of course held in specially created Tea corners, or waiting in line for, well everything. The English cuisine is unique and delicious in it’s own way, and by no means bad, as is often claimed. Our former interns report from the intern perspective, how they perceived the English culture during their internship.
Internship in smaller cities in England
Many globally influential and competitive companies have settled in London. If a long-term stay in a big metropolis like London is a bit too much bustle for you, you could opt for smaller cities in the South of England as Manchester, Brighton, Bristol or Cardiff – however, without compromising on quality. Bristol is a colorful student city with a lively nightlife, Brighton offers a combination of the same entertainment as London a fresh sea breeze, as well as the not too distant and historic coastal town of Cardiff. However you will very quickly find yourself at home in every city because although many things are different there is something very familiar about the each of the cities.
“Look for a bike to rent on the docks of Braclays, around 2 pounds a day, and take a bike ride through the city”
– Jana, intern at a law firm.
Living in London
Those with only a limited budget available should look outside the City Center for an apartment. The different price levels are divided into zones. One should be aware that you cannot expect a lot of luxury for a small amount of money, but on a budget you will get to experience the quintessential English lifestyle. Those who are brave enough can book through various internet platforms, rooms in a hostel for the first few days of their stay while they find their way around and search for something more permanent. Our partner organization will help to organize a homestay with a guest family in London which makes the adventure in England just that bit more perfect.
"I chose a small room near Mitcham. The family was very friendly, my room was cleaned regularly and even breakfast was provided."
– Theresa, intern in Event Management
