Volunteering in the Philippines - Travel Preparation

Flight and Arrival

To reach your volunteer destination Tigman, you will fly to the Puerto Princesa International Airport which is located in the islands capital Puerto Princesa. Your local coordinator will pick you up at the airport and drop you at your accommodation in Tigman.

There are barely any direct flights to Palawan, so you will have at least one stopover until you reach your destination.

Please note, that most international airports in the Philippines charge an airport tax upon departure.

Getting around in the Philippines

Jeepneys are a very common means of transport in the Philippines. These are converted army jeeps which are left over from the US army in World War II. However, in the cities there is also a fully developed bus transportation system. In the rural areas buses run only at certain times. Another very popular means of transport are the so-called Habal-Habal, these are motorcycle taxis.

Before you start your journey to the Philippines, please make sure that you are up to date on your vaccines. You will need the following ones:

  • Tetanus
  • Hepatitis A und B
  • Diphtheria
  • Whooping cough
  • Polio
  • MMR
  • Pneumococcus
  • Influenza

Further information on the recommended vaccinations can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.
